“Photography 365” is a project challenging you to document your life by taking a picture a day for a solid year.
Why you ask, would anyone want to do something like that? The main reason is simply to improve as a photographer. Whether you’re a complete amateur, or came into the world with a camera slung around your neck, practice makes perfect!
The more you use your camera, the more you know what works, and what doesn’t. Over time I’ve realized that what looks good through the viewfinder doesn’t necessarily look good in print. Taking a picture a day for a year will provide more practice and experience than many people get in a lifetime.
Another goal of mine is creativity. I imagine it wouldn’t be long before a person got tired of holding a camera at arms length to snap a self portrait. Or standing in the mirror to do the same. Likewise, a Monday through Friday routine consisting of commuting to work, sitting at a desk, cramming lunch, more desk time, and commuting back home, doesn’t offer many photo opportunities. I want to be able to look back at these photos years from now, and remember what was going on that day, if possible. A memorable photograph requires doing something memorable.
The final goal is to document life for a year. Capture all those moments that you normally would have just forgotten. To look back at a photo years from now and know just what was happening that day. To capture the people that I may never meet again; the experiences I may never have again…
Always being one to do things differently, and to make things a bit more interesting, I’ve asking fellow photography enthusiast to join me on this project. We’ll both be posting our daily photos together.
I’ve set the start date to August 1, 2011. That’s the date for submitting my first photo, if everything goes to plan. Who knows where we’ll be, or what we’ll be doing that day, but I’m hoping that I’ll be able to look back at this project several years from now and be able to tell you.
Wish us luck!
